News Sources

One thing that has become distressingly apparent is that our traditional, somewhat reliable news sources have decided to obey in advance and are currying the favor of the incoming administration by rejecting their principles and their duty to the people.

Fortunately there are some new, non-traditional outlets that seem to be trying to uphold journalistic standards. Below are a few that I have found recently. I cannot yet fully vouch for these sites, but on initial glance they seem to be on the right track. I will update this list as I find sources and look closer at them.

The Contrarian: This new Substack site says that it is unflinching, unapologetic, and unwavering in its commitment to truth-telling. It was started by ex-Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin and Norman Eisen who was special counsel for ethics and government reform in the Obama White House.

Fair Observer: This is an independent, nonprofit media organization that engages in citizen journalism and civic education. It seems to be sort of a site of crowd-sourced news from around the world.

Trustworthy Media: This is a news aggregator that collects headlines from 300+ independent media sources all in one place, updated throughout the day. I have noticed that some of the articles here are quite dated so this site likely has gaps in coverage.

Heather Cox Richardson: She is a historian, rather than a journalist, but provides very interesting perspectives on current events compared to historical events. Her popular “Letters from an American” are posted and emailed out daily free although there are paid subscription levels to her substack. She also does a political chat on facebook that she also releases on youtube.

Ground News seems to be a good place to go to understand bias in the news. It will be interesting to use this service to see if and how the mainstream networks and papers move to the political right.

The Guardian Newspaper: I just became a paid supporter of the paper but I don’t think you need to pay to see their content (you just have to deal with ads). The premise of the paper seems sound and the Media Bias site rates it pretty well for left leaning bias though it got a medium mark for fact checking. Still, I think it may be a good daily source for news. I will edit this if I find out differently. https://www.theguardian.com/us
