Resisting Authoritarianism

While there are some good news each week in the continuing struggle between fans of democracy and Maga (here), I believe we are still heading toward authoritarianism. Perhaps I am being pessimistic, but if indeed we are heading there, we are doing so quickly and we should understand how to resist this trend now instead of waiting until the full force is upon us.

Here is a great list of things to do. A few of these really resonated with me:

Under “Strengthen Yourself First“, Know your rights is really important. I recently watched a short video about someone returning from Aruba (I think) and describing the gauntlet of ICE agents in the jetway asking people questions and searching luggage. I don’t know if this is legal or whether you can refuse to cooperate without repercussions, but just knowing your rights would at least reduce your stress in those circumstances.

Another one under that heading is Document everything. I am a bit paranoid about this and try to have printed hard copies of certain documents in addition to local digital files. I do not store anything important on “the cloud” because those are almost completely controlled by the same corporations that are working with the Trump administration.
Try to keep regular digital backups and keep one in a fire-proof box or in another location in case of fire or natural disaster. Make hardcopies of social security statements, medicaid and medicare documents, and bank statements. These may be the only proof you have if Doge people corrupt databases.

Under “Build Stronger Local Networks“, Joining or starting a local group is important for many reasons. It lets you know who in your area shares your values, it can lead to strong friendships (which we all need), and it will keep your resistance energy up.
The other one under this I like is Normalize dissent in everyday conversation. One of the most effective tools of the authoritarian is to quash open discussion. Yes, many of us want to avoid confrontation and we tend to step carefully when speaking to new people or people we know are pro-maga. Arguments with such people will not work. But unemotional statements of truth may plant a seed of doubt in their minds.

Under “Take Smart, Strategic Action“, all the suggestions are important. For instance I am actively boycotting many companies in protest of their political values. But probably the most important action is Never assume it is too late. We have not been defeated and any actions, even if you feel they are too small or won’t do any good, are needed now. Authoritarians count on the populace giving up quickly and we should not help them. We must resist to the end.

If nothing else, taking actions is good for our mental health. It tells ourselves that we are doing something positive and not simply curling up in despair.
